THE INGREDIENT, EXPLAINED
What is
glutathione?
Glutathione, or GSH, is a tripeptide made from glutamate, cysteine and glycine. Your cells produce it as part of their antioxidant defence system. It is often called the body’s “master antioxidant”.
A small peptide. An essential role.
A peptide is a chain of amino acids. “Tripeptide” means this chain has three building blocks. Glutathione is therefore a peptide by its chemical structure; the word does not tell you how a supplement is delivered.
Glutamate, cysteine and glycine form the glutathione molecule. GSH is the abbreviation commonly used for its reduced form. Recognising these names helps you read studies and product labels without treating every different term as a different ingredient.
What does glutathione do?
Its central biological roles concern the cell’s chemical balance and defence. The overview by Forman and colleagues describes protection against oxidative damage and reactions that help handle certain foreign compounds.
Cell defence
Participates in reactions that handle oxidants.
Chemical balance
Helps maintain the cell’s redox balance.
Conjugation
Can bind certain reactive compounds in cellular detoxification reactions.
From a molecule to a supplement.
On a label, separate the ingredient from the delivery format. “Glutathione” tells you what the ingredient is. “Liposomal” describes its carrier. “Liquid oral drops” describes a way of taking it. Those terms answer different questions.
Also check whether a stated milligram amount is per serving or per bottle. Bottle volume in millilitres and ingredient quantity in milligrams measure different things. A 60 ml bottle tells you the liquid volume; it does not establish a serving dose.
For a delivery comparison, continue to the liposomal guide. For findings in people, use the research guide: a molecule’s biological role and the outcome of taking a supplement are different questions.
Your questions, answered.
Is glutathione a peptide?
Yes. Glutathione is a tripeptide: its molecule contains three amino-acid building blocks.
Does the body make glutathione?
Yes. Glutathione is synthesised in cells; it is not only an ingredient found in supplements.
Is GlutaPeptide the same thing as glutathione?
GlutaPeptide is our brand. Glutathione is the ingredient in our liposomal liquid oral drops, supplied in a 60 ml dropper bottle.
